Pushing the Limit on Facebook Marketing?

Snoop Dogg has rolled out a new service to his fans on his Facebook page and he’s making some bucks too.

The rapper launched his  MarketPage on Facebook last Friday, MarketPage is a new program that allows retailers to access their fan base and sell products. The Snooper Market as they are calling it is selling items with the stars name and likeness on it. He is the first to be doing this.

Timeline Cover Guidelines

Reading more about the timeline cover guidelines it seems borderline whether it’s within the terms on Facebook. On the new Fan Page Timeline, the first time you upload a cover image there may be a display that says to pick a unique photo. This space is not meant for banner ads or other promotions. The fan pages are not supposed to be used for any type of commercial gain or promotion.

The one rule Facebook has in its Terms regarding how we cannot use our profiles commercially is this (Section 4.4):

“You will not use your personal profile for your own commercial gain (such as selling your status update to an advertiser).”

Is Snoop Breaking the Rules? Or is Facebook Sending Us Mixed Messages?

Snoop’s Fan Page is blatantly selling his product on his cover photo. He has a picture of slippers and it reads: Available at Snoop’s Marketplace with an arrow where to buy. That is clearly a promotional call to action. He has over 16 million likes on his page so he’s a big profiled artist. It will be interesting to see whether the picture gets taken down. If smaller pages were “selling” in their cover photo it probably would be pulled right away. We will be following to see what happens.

The idea makes sense but it would have to work for all people and all businesses. People go to Snoop Dogg’s Facebook page to see what he’s doing and talk to other fans. Fans are able to comment on the items, post if they got them, what they liked about them, what they may want to see on the Snooper Market and more. Over 16 million of his fans on Facebook will have instant access to his MarketPage. He has invited other merchants to sell on his page and plans to open it up for everyone in the near future.

I believe that he could be in the right on this one. Facebook doesn’t have just personal pages, you also have the option of creating a fan page/business page which is intended to display company promotions etc. like Walmart or and other company that is well known, snoop dogg IS his company. So I believe as long as his page is a PAGE not a personal PROFILE, then this is an amazing idea and he should capitalize on whatever business he can get from it.
