Who Owns Your Website?

Sounds like a stupid question. You do, of course… BUT not so fast.

You hire a web development firm to develop, design and maintain your website and it should be a slam dunk. Well, things are not so simple.

Who Owns Your Website? ~ Web Success Team

Your website is your online business and a very important aspect of your livelihood. It is imperative that you have control over who is going to mange your valuable information.

Here are a few tips to keep you out of trouble:

  1.  Make sure you control your domain name and you own it outright. For this you can use GoDaddy or any other registrar service of your choice to manage your urls and to keep them up-to-date. Don’t forget to renew. The registrar companies are very good about sending you periodic emails to renew your domains names about 2 months before your domain name expires.
  2.  Who will be hosting your website? Choose a hosting service that you can actually have a conversation with and ask them to provide you with all the hosting information necessary and keep this in your records. Sometimes your designer will choose a hosting company that will host all their client websites. Make sure that you make it clear to them that you should have access to all FTP and email information.
  3.  Your Website Backup. Ask your hosting company to provide you with a website backup at least once a month and keep it in a safe place.
  4.  Your Shopping Cart. This may seem very obvious but not everyone has access to their own shopping cart or wants to deal with the technological problems that may arise. I strongly recommend that once your cart account is set-up that you appoint someone in your office to manage this very important aspect of your business.
  5.  Your Blog. If your web service or online marketing agency is managing your website you should at least have admin access to your blog for management.
  6. Your Email Marketing Service. Weather it is MailChimp, Constant Contact or any other email marketing service you need to have access to your control panel and you should download a backup of your email leads at least once a month and keep it in a safe place.

Take control…of your online business, whether you are a corporation or a small business the online information and your website belongs to you.
